During a talk with the Arms Control Association, Pranay Vaddi, Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Arms Control at the White House, mentioned that if rival countries continue to strengthen their arsenals, the US might have to increase its deployed nuclear weapons in the future. He emphasized the importance of being ready to act if the president decides to make such a move.

US Warns of Potential Nuclear Arsenal Expansion

The United States has issued a stark warning amidst escalating global tensions, hinting at the possibility of expanding its nuclear arsenal. This cautionary statement comes in response to the rapid development of nuclear programs in countries such as Russia, China, and North Korea.

Pranay Vaddi, Special Assistant to the President and Senior Director for Arms Control at the White House, highlighted the need for preparedness in case the president decides to increase the number of deployed nuclear weapons. This development underscores the gravity of current geopolitical dynamics and the imperative for strategic readiness on a global scale.

Growing Nuclear Concerns

In the event of such a day, Vaddi thinks we might need more nuclear weapons to deter enemies of the US and keep Americans, as well as Washington’s friends, safe.

Vaddi’s comments come as tensions rise between the US, Russia, and China, sparking fears of a big war. In May, Russia did nuclear weapons drills as a response to aggressive statements from some Western leaders.

Russian media often talks about using nuclear weapons against Western countries like the US, France, the UK, and the Netherlands.

Vaddi warned that China, Russia, and North Korea are quickly growing their nuclear weapons stockpiles without caring much about arms control.

He said these three countries, along with Iran’s help, are working together more closely, which goes against peace, threatens the US and its friends, and makes regional tensions worse. He also said they’re sharing missile and drone tech.

US Alerted by Putin’s Missile Warning

Recently, the United States got worried after hearing what Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin, said. Putin basically threatened that Russia might put some regular missiles close to countries in the West. This threat came after some countries allowed Ukraine to use their weapons against Russian targets on Ukrainian soil for the first time ever.

When someone asked Putin if Russia should use nuclear weapons to scare the West, he said it wasn’t necessary for now. Meanwhile, in an interview, Donald Trump, the former US President, said that the possibility of a nuclear war is a bigger concern for the US than climate change.

Even though Russia has the most nuclear weapons in the world, according to a report by Reuters, the US hasn’t gone beyond the limit of 1,550 strategic nuclear warheads. This limit was set in a deal made in 2010 between the US and Russia, called the New START deal.
