In response to the situation, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol addressed the nation on television. He stated that he was determined to remove any forces in the country that supported North Korea. He also promised to protect South Korea’s democratic system and ensure that the country’s constitution is respected.

At the time of this report, it was unclear how the emergency martial law would impact South Korea’s government and the way its democracy operates. The full effects of this decision were not yet understood, and the situation was still developing.

South Korean President Declares Emergency Martial Law

On Tuesday, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol declared martial law in an emergency address that was broadcast live, as reported by Reuters. In his unexpected late-night speech on YTN television, Yeol stated that he would work to eliminate “shameless pro-North Korean anti-state forces” from the country.

While he didn’t mention any specific threats from North Korea, Yeol focused on his political opponents within South Korea. His decision to declare martial law shocked many, especially given the country’s history of authoritarian leaders in the past. Since the 1980s, South Korea has been governed by democratic leaders.

The announcement had an immediate economic impact, as the value of the South Korean won sharply declined against the US dollar.

South Korean President Yoon explained that he had no other option but to take such drastic action in order to protect South Korea’s democratic and constitutional order. He accused opposition parties of taking control of the parliamentary process and using it to push the country into a crisis.

Yoon stated, “I declare martial law to protect the free Republic of Korea from the threat of North Korean communist forces, to eradicate the despicable pro-North Korean anti-state forces that are plundering the freedom and happiness of our people, and to protect the free constitutional order.”

However, the president did not outline specific actions that would be taken under martial law. Meanwhile, Yonhap News Agency reported that the entrance to the parliament was blocked.

Political Struggles Mark President Yoon’s Leadership

Since taking office in 2022, South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol has faced ongoing challenges in advancing his government’s agenda in South Korea’s parliament, where opposition parties hold a numerical majority over his People Power Party (PPP).

Tensions between the PPP and South Korea’s main opposition party, the Democratic Party, recently escalated over next year’s budget bill, which became a key point of conflict.

South Korean President Yoon has also faced criticism from opposition parties for rejecting calls for an independent investigation into scandals involving his wife and top government officials.

In response to Yoon’s martial law declaration, the Democratic Party reportedly called an emergency meeting of its lawmakers to discuss the situation.
