About Manipur Conflict

About a year ago, serious conflicts erupted between the Meitei and Kuki communities in Manipur, resulting in widespread violence across the state. Over a three-day period in May, the clashes claimed the lives of approximately 52 people. Unfortunately, the violence persisted for months, with the death toll rising to 226 within a year.

Despite the severity of the situation, the ongoing violence in Manipur remained largely overlooked. Even after a disturbing incident involving the public humiliation of a Kuki woman surfaced online in July, the issue failed to gain significant attention.

This incident prompted strong condemnation, including remarks from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and caught the attention of the Supreme Court. On July 20, the Chief Justice of India, DY Chandrachud, along with a bench of the Supreme Court, directed the government to take action.

In the past year, over 1,500 individuals have been injured, and approximately 60,000 people have been forced to flee their homes in Manipur. Additionally, nearly 13,247 structures have been damaged or destroyed, as reported by the Indian Express.

How ‘All Eyes on’ Trend Started?

The trend of “all eyes on” gained momentum following Israel’s intense bombing of Rafah, a city where many refugees had fled to escape attacks elsewhere in Gaza. Iran’s Embassy in India defines “All eyes on Rafah” as a term highlighting the ongoing tragedy in Rafah, Gaza, where over 1.4 million Palestinians are seeking refuge.

Following Israel’s assault on Rafah on Sunday, May 26, hashtags like “#AllEyesOnRafah” and “#RafahOnFire” quickly gained popularity on social media platforms such as X, Instagram, and Facebook. The attack resulted in the deaths of approximately 45 civilians and left hundreds injured.
