The newly appointed ministers joined the meeting at around 5 PM, a day after their swearing-in ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan. Notably, PM Narendra Modi had not yet assigned the new ministers their portfolios.

Since its inception in 2015-16, the PMAY has aimed to help eligible rural and urban households build homes with essential amenities. Over the past decade, the scheme has successfully completed 42.1 million houses for low-income families.

Modi 3.0 Cabinet Approves 3 Crore New Houses

The Modi 3.0 cabinet, which is the latest government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, gave the green light on Monday to a big idea: building 3 crore new houses in both rural and urban areas. This plan falls under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, a government program aimed at helping people find affordable housing.

This meeting was special because it was the first gathering of the Modi 3.0 Union Cabinet. It brought together ministers from all the political parties that are part of the NDA, which is the coalition led by Modi’s party.

The goal of building so many new houses is to tackle the country’s growing need for places to live. This initiative recognizes that more and more people need safe and comfortable homes, whether they live in the countryside or in cities.

What Is Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana?

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana, which started in 2015-16, aims to help people in both rural and urban areas who are eligible to build homes that have basic facilities. These facilities include things like toilets, gas connections, electricity, and running water. Over the last ten years, a whopping 4.21 crore houses have been built for families in need through various housing schemes.

What’s interesting is that all the houses built under the PMAY program come with these basic facilities, thanks to cooperation between different government schemes. This means families moving into these houses don’t have to worry about things like where to go to the bathroom or how to cook safely.

Looking ahead to the 2024 Lok Sabha election, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has made a big promise. They’ve pledged to build a staggering 3 crore new houses under the PMAY program if they win. This shows a commitment to helping even more families have a safe and comfortable place to live.

And there’s more good news! Earlier this year, the Union Finance Minister, Nirmala Sitharaman, announced that the PMAY program would be extended. This extension was declared during the budget speech in February, just before the general elections. So, it seems like there’s a strong effort to keep this vital housing initiative going strong.
