Today, Manohar Joshi, a prominent figure in Maharashtra politics and former Chief Minister, passed away at the age of 86 in Mumbai. He was admitted to Hinduja Hospital on February 21 due to a heart attack and passed away at 3.02 am this morning. His funeral will commence after 2 pm, and he will be cremated at Dadar crematorium with state honors.

Joshi held several significant positions during his career. He served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 1995 to 1999 and later as the Speaker of the Lok Sabha from 2002 to 2004. Starting as a teacher, he entered politics in 1967 and was a key figure in the Shiv Sena-BJP coalition.

Despite his recent absence from active politics, Joshi remained a respected leader. He began his political journey by securing a seat as a councillor in the Maharashtra Legislative Council and later served as the Mayor of Mumbai from 1976 to 1977, earning the trust of Balasaheb Thackeray along the way.

Manohar Joshi Death

Former Maharashtra Chief Minister, Manohar Joshi, was hospitalized at PD Hinduja Hospital on February 21, 2024, due to a heart-related issue. His condition is critical, and he is currently receiving intensive care in the ICU. Mr. Joshi, who served as the Chief Minister of Maharashtra from 1995 to 1999, was the first leader from the Shiv Sena party to hold this position in the state.

He also had a notable political career, serving as a Member of Parliament and as the Lok Sabha Speaker from 2002 to 2004. Born on December 2, 1937, in Nandvi, Raigad district, Maharashtra, Mr. Joshi received his education in Mumbai. He was married to Anagha Manohar Joshi, who passed away in 2020 at the age of 75. He is survived by a son and two daughters.

Manohar Joshi Health Struggles

Unmesh, Joshi’s son shared that his father had been in the ICU due to cardiac trouble. He had been dealing with age-related health issues for some time. The family plans to hold the last rites at Shivaji Park crematorium after bringing Joshi’s mortal remains to their house in Matunga.

Joshi’s health started declining significantly in May 2023 following a brain haemorrhage. He was hospitalized at Hinduja Hospital’s ICU and remained semi-conscious for several days. With little hope of recovery, doctors advised shifting him back home to Shivaji Park for care.

Manohar Joshi Political Career

Manohar Joshi started as a teacher before venturing into politics in 1967 with the Shiv Sena, a journey that spanned over four decades.

During 1968-70, he held the position of Municipal Councilor in Mumbai and chaired the Standing Committee (Municipal Corporation) in 1970. He then served as Mumbai’s Mayor for a year from 1976 to 1977.

In 1972, Joshi was elected to the Maharashtra Legislative Council. Following three terms in the Legislative Council, he entered the Maharashtra Legislative Assembly in 1990.

Joshi also assumed the role of the Leader of the Opposition in the Maharashtra Assembly from 1990 to 1991.

In the 1999 General Elections, Joshi secured victory from the Mumbai North-Central Lok Sabha Constituency under the banner of Shiv Sena.
