In 2025, Vat Savitri Amavasya will be observed on Monday, May 26, and Vat Savitri Purnima Vrat will take place on Tuesday, June 10. Knowing these dates and the meaning behind the festival helps devotees honor the day with true devotion and understanding.

Vat Savitri Vrat 2025

Vat Savitri Vrat is a sacred fasting ritual observed by married Hindu women who pray for their husbands’ health, long life, and prosperity. The vrat is rooted in the powerful story of Savitri, a loyal wife who bravely convinced Yama, the god of death, to restore her husband’s life, symbolizing love, strength, and devotion.

The date of this vrat varies in different regions of India because of two distinct lunar calendar systems:

  • Purnimanta Calendar (used in North India): In states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh, Punjab, and Haryana, Vat Savitri Vrat is celebrated on Jyeshtha Amavasya (new moon day). In 2025, this falls on Monday, May 26, which also marks Shani Jayanti.
  • Amanta Calendar (followed in Maharashtra, Gujarat, and South India): Here, the same ritual is observed as Vat Purnima Vrat on Jyeshtha Purnima (full moon day). In 2025, this will be on Tuesday, June 10.

Because of these calendar differences, women in North India observe Vat Savitri about 15 days earlier than those in the West and South.

Vat Savitri Vrat Story

According to Hindu mythology, Satyavaan was fated to die young. Despite knowing this, a devoted woman named Savitri chose to marry him. One day, while Satyavaan was cutting wood in the forest, the god of death, Yamraj, arrived to take his soul. When Savitri found her husband lifeless, she followed Yamraj and pleaded with him to return Satyavaan’s life.

Yamraj asked her to go back, but she refused and kept following him. Moved by her loyalty and love, Yamraj granted her three wishes, except for her husband’s life.

For her first wish, Savitri asked for her father-in-law’s eyesight to be restored. Her second wish was for his lost kingdom to be returned. For the third, she asked for the blessing of having 100 sons.

Yamraj granted all three wishes. But when Savitri still didn’t leave, he asked her why she continued to follow him. Savitri wisely replied that she couldn’t have 100 sons without her husband. Realizing her intelligence and deep devotion, Yamraj agreed to bring Satyavaan back to life.

Vat Savitri Vrat 2025 Significance

Vat Savitri is a deeply revered festival celebrated by married Hindu women. On this special day, they worship the sacred banyan tree and pray for their husbands’ good health, long life, and well-being. A key part of the ritual includes observing a strict fast and reading the inspiring story of Savitri and Satyavaan.

The Vat Savitri Vrat is observed on two different lunar days. In North India, it is usually kept on Amavasya (new moon day), while in Maharashtra, it is observed on Purnima (full moon day).

The banyan tree holds great spiritual importance in Hinduism. It is believed to be the dwelling place of the Holy Trinity, Lord Brahma, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Shiva. Seen as a symbol of immortality, the banyan tree represents long life and wish fulfillment. On this day, women also worship Goddess Savitri, asking for her blessings to lead a joyful and successful married life.
