Traditionally, the fast ends when both the Ashtami Tithi (eighth lunar day) and Rohini Nakshatra (star constellation) conclude. Some devotees may choose to break their fast at the end of either day.

The puja vidhi for this festival is crucial as it centers around celebrating Laddoo Gopal’s birth. Follow these steps for a meaningful puja:

  1. Begin by bathing and dressing in fresh clothes.
  2. At night, decorate Sri Krishna’s cradle (palna) and clean the shrine with Gangajal.
  3. Begin with meditation (dhyana) and place the Lord Krishna idol on the palna or a wooden chowki if you don’t have a palna.
  4. Offer water to the deity’s feet, known as padya, and give the Lord arghya.
  5. Perform achaman by offering water to the Lord and then drinking it.
  6. Bathe the idol with Panchamrit, a mixture of milk, curd, honey, ghee, and Gangajal.
  7. Make Panchamrit from the five ingredients and prepare it as prasad.
  8. Dress the idol in new clothes and accessories, a process called shringaar.
  9. Present a sacred janeu, apply Chandan paste, and adorn the idol with a crown, jewellery, mor pankh, and bansuri.
  10. Offer flowers, Tulsi leaves, light incense, and an oil lamp. Provide Makhan and Mishree as bhog, and present a tambulam with coconut, betel nuts, haldi, paan, and kumkum.
  11. Sing Kunj Bihari’s aarti, perform a parikrama, and pray with joined hands for the safety and well-being of your family.

Janmashtami 2024 Significance

Hindu scriptures tell us that Sri Krishna was born in Mathura to Devaki and Vasudeva on the eighth day of the dark half of Bhadrapada month. Devaki’s brother, Kansa, was the demon king of Mathura. A prophecy warned that Kansa would be defeated by Devaki’s eighth son because of his evil deeds. To prevent this, Kansa imprisoned Devaki and Vasudeva and tried to kill their children as soon as they were born.

When Devaki had her eighth child, a magical sleep fell over the entire palace. During this time, Vasudeva secretly took the baby to Yashodha and Nanda in Vrindavan. This child was an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, known later as Sri Krishna. He grew up to defeat Kansa and end his reign of terror.
