International Moon Day 2025 History

On July 20, 1969, American astronauts Neil Armstrong and Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin made history by landing on the Moon. This milestone was achieved during the Apollo 11 mission, which was launched eight years after President John F. Kennedy’s ambitious goal to land a man on the Moon by the end of the 1960s.

Kennedy’s moon mission idea was first presented in a 1961 speech to Congress, where he declared, “I believe this nation should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the moon and returning him safely to Earth.”

At that time, the U.S. was in a space race with the Soviet Union amid the Cold War, making Kennedy’s proposal a significant national objective. NASA launched its first unmanned Apollo mission after five years of intense work by a global team of engineers and scientists, testing the spacecraft’s durability.

On July 16, 1969, Apollo 11 took off from Kennedy Space Center at 9:32 A.M. with Armstrong, Aldrin, and Michael Collins onboard. The spacecraft reached lunar orbit three days later on July 19. The following day, Armstrong and Aldrin separated from the command module in the lunar module, Eagle. Upon landing on the Moon, Armstrong famously reported, “The Eagle has landed.”

At 10:39 P.M., Armstrong exited the lunar module and descended the ladder, his movements captured by a camera and broadcast live to a captivated world. At 10:56 P.M., he set foot on the Moon’s surface, delivering his iconic message: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.”
