Hariyali Teej 2024 History

On this day, Lord Shiva is said to have accepted Parvati as his wife. According to legend, Goddess Parvati undertook a challenging penance over 107 lifetimes to win Shiva’s love. After her 108th birth, she succeeded in gaining his favor and became known as ‘Teej Mata’. She married Shiva on her 108th birthday during the Shukla Paksha Tritiya of Shravan.

Parvati journeyed to the Himalayas to demonstrate her steadfast love. She created a Shiva Lingam from sand and lived on dry leaves in her past lives to prove her devotion. Despite her sacrifices, Shiva remained unaware of her devotion due to his vow of celibacy. However, upon recognizing her dedication and sincere fasting rituals, he accepted her as his wife.

Hariyali Teej 2024 Significance

Hariyali Teej is a special festival for married women, symbolizing their devotion to their husbands’ health and longevity. Observing a fast on this day is believed to ensure their spouses’ well-being. Women traditionally wear 16 ornaments to safeguard their husbands, a practice particularly valued by newlyweds.

Unmarried women also join the celebrations, hoping for a good marriage. The festival coincides with the monsoon season, celebrating the vibrant green landscapes. Women dress in green to reflect the season’s lushness and natural beauty.

On Hariyali Teej, homes are thoroughly cleaned, sanitized, and adorned with flowers. A Shiv Lingam, along with idols of Goddess Parvati, Lord Shiva, and Lord Ganesha, is placed in the house.
