Tripura, Manipur and Meghalaya Foundation Day 2024 History

The North Eastern part of India consists of 7 states, collectively known as the “Seven Sisters.” However, these states did not achieve statehood simultaneously. When India gained independence in 1947, the North Eastern region included the Assam plains, hill districts, North Eastern Frontier Tracts (NEFT), and the Princely States of Tripura and Manipur.

In 1949, Manipur and Tripura were designated as Union Territories. Nagaland became a state on December 1, 1963. Initially, Meghalaya functioned as an autonomous state within Assam as per the Sixth Schedule of the Indian Constitution, established by the Assam Reorganisation (Meghalaya) Act of 1969. However, it took some time for Meghalaya to achieve full statehood.

Finally, on January 21, 1972, Manipur, Tripura, and Meghalaya attained statehood under the North East Reorganisation Act of 1972. Mizoram later became a fully recognized state in 1987 following the Mizo Accord of 1986.
