HCLTech is launching a new policy that connects how often employees can take leave with how frequently they come into the office. This information comes from a report by Moneycontrol.

The main goal of this policy is to make sure that employees come to the office at least three days every week. Over a month, this adds up to at least 12 days. The company is doing this to encourage workers to return to the office more regularly after the pandemic period when many were working from home.

So, under this new rule, if you’re an employee at HCLTech, you’ll need to be in the office for at least three days each week. This will help you meet the monthly requirement of 12 days in the office, which is linked to your ability to take leave.

HCLTech New Policy

HCLTech, India’s third-largest software exporter, is implementing a new policy that ties employee leaves to office attendance, as reported by Moneycontrol. Employees must now work from the office three days a week and at least 12 days a month. Missing these requirements will result in a reduction of their leave days.

This policy change comes five months after HCL Tech adopted a hybrid work model, which also required employees to return to the office three days a week.

According to an anonymous source cited by Moneycontrol, the HR department has started informing teams about this update via email, and it is already in effect. The source mentioned that once employees exhaust their leaves, it could lead to a loss of pay.

Currently, HCLTech provides 18 annual leaves and one personal leave to employees with less than three years of service. Those with more than three years of service receive around 20 annual leaves and two personal leaves.

Leave Deductions and Pay Loss in Hybrid Work Policy

Employees who don’t comply with the new hybrid work model will face leave deductions for each day of absence, leading to potential loss of pay. This policy, implemented five months ago, requires employees to be in the office three days a week.

According to a report on moneycontrol.com, an anonymous employee revealed that the HR department is notifying staff about this update through emails, and the policy is already in force.

“Once our leave balance is exhausted, it could result in a loss of pay,” the employee said.

Currently, HCLTech employees with less than three years of service get 18 annual leaves and one personal leave. Those with more than three years of service receive about 20 annual leaves and two personal leaves.

“Our hybrid work policy offers flexibility, allowing middle and senior-level management to work from the office three days a week, fostering collaboration. Other employees follow work arrangements planned by their managers to meet client needs,” an HCLTech spokesperson told the publication.

Return to Office

Initially, IT services companies adopted a hybrid work model, allowing employees to work remotely.

However, many current employees joined during the Covid pandemic and had never been to their offices. Now, companies believe that office attendance will help new employees build social connections and improve collaboration on projects.

HCLTech’s decision follows TCS, which had already linked its quarterly variable pay to office attendance.

In April, TCS required employees to attend the office at least 60% of the time to be eligible for variable pay, enforcing strict disciplinary actions for repeated non-compliance.

As a result, nearly 70% of TCS employees have returned to the office.
